Asa Brebner & Friends Live at The Abbey Lounge ye Enhanced Scrapbook CD:25 Years of Rock ye Live Performances at the Abbey Lounge, April 21 and 22, 2006
[CAMBRIDGE, MA] Asa Brebner, favorite to many, releases his first live album, entitled ABBEY LODE, April 17th on Hi-N-Dry Records. Two special record release shows, hosted by Brebner, and joined by his many musical friends will take over Inman Square's Abbey Lounge, April 21st and 22nd.
ABBEY LODE, the first live recording by Boston's unsung hero, Asa Brebner, totes over an hour of live music with 18 songs, was recorded live a year ago (Feb 25, 26, 27) at the Abbey. With a special introduction by friend Peter Wolf, the record blares anchors of Brebner's live sets from his 5 full-length solo albums, including favorites "Babes in the Bar," "Jack's On Drugs," and "Showdown." Guest performers include Dennis Brennan, Jill Kurtz, Pat Wallace, Andrew Mazzone, Ted Drosdowski, Kevin Shurtleff, Billy Conway, Dana Colley, Laurie Sargeant, Andrea Gillis, and countless other musicians and friends.
Produced by Brebner and John Pfister, ABBEY LODE includes a world-wind "enhanced CD" scrapbook of photos, articles, flyers, ticket stubs and memorabilia of Brebner's career over the last decades.
Brebner was awarded with a special "unsung hero Les Paul award" at last year's Boston Music Awards, presented by friend and fellow musician Billy Beard. He's toured with Eileen Rose in Europe, produced records by Kendra Flowers and Peter Johnson, and recently helped with the benefit concert to save Cambridge's Brattle Theatre with friends Robin Lane & The Chartbusters.
Further, Brebner continues pursuing his visual art, exhibiting in Boston and New York. He recently created a new group of his noted line drawings, and is working on a new group of the fantastical 3-d sculpture paintings to show at the Paradise Lounge Gallery in the near future.
The Abbey Lounge is located at 3 Beacon Street, Inman Square, Somerville, MA. In shot, this Somerville swilling ground has all the dirty, drunken, dark affections of a true neighborhood dive. Ambience comes courtesy of the graffiti that adorns the bathroom walls, plus the handful of grizzled regulars who consider the bar a second home. With raucous punk acts playing in the adjacent lounge--where there's not a lounge-able seat in sight--customers adhere to the drink more, talk less rule of conduct at this decidedly anti-hip establishment. "Binding songs with lean guitar barbs and vocal lines that skitter in syncopation across ensemble grooves , Asa Brebner's sound attends to limber rhythms even as it kindles passions"
- Tim Riley , Boston Phoenix
Lyrically, one senses that Brebner is a romantic whose faith keeps getting tested. He's good with wry turns of phrase but puts real feeling behind the cleverness."
- Brett Milano, Boston Globe
"Brebner makes real music for real people- how often can you say that these days?"- Steve Morse, Boston Globe
"Asa's great. What a penetrating lyricist! He's got a bit of the elegance of the English language. Nice guitar playing too."
- Jonathan Richman
"I've got five words for ya. The guys a fuckin' genius!"
- Joe Coughlin, The Noise
"Lyrically and musically speaking Asa Brebner's album "The Best No Money Can Buy" is the finest he's produced. Pristinely recorded, Brebner gives the listener a giant slice of Americana that incorporates everything from country and blues to pop and carnival He has become a masterful songwriter along with lone of the tastiest guitar players this region has to offer"
- Metronome
"What really succeeds in putting across these songs is Brebner's guitar sound, the angriest snarl this side of Richard Thompson, whose skirling sound Brebner's playing often recalls. Boston Rock fans and guitar freaks alike will find "Ragged Religion " a devotional experience"
- The Boston Herald
